OVERVIEW

Safe and effective antibiotic use has been a cornerstone of antimicrobial stewardship with a goal of combating bacterial resistance and improving patient outcomes. This program provides a general pharmacological overview of various antimicrobial medications, their mechanisms of action, side effects and spectrum of activity while highlighting key clinical pearls in choosing the appropriate antibiotic(s) in the outpatient setting to reduce bacterial resistance.

Educational Objectives:
After completing this activity, the participant should be better able to:

  1. Discuss antimicrobial classification(s) based upon mechanism(s) of action, effect(s) on bacteria, and spectrum(s) of activity
  2. Cite key antimicrobial pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic principles to support a systematic approach to antimicrobial selection 
  3. Evaluate potential factors contributing to antimicrobial treatment failure
  4. Identify the importance of effective antimicrobial stewardship in outpatient practice.
