The AMC originated from a long medical tradition. Although Amsterdam did not have a university until 1877, Amsterdam still had a worthwhile position next to the university cities of Leiden and Utrecht. In 1632, the Athenaeum Illustre was established, a school for higher education where young people could start with an academic study. The students of the Athenaeum Illustre could quickly and easily complete their studies at a real university after their education.
As a university medical center, the AMC has three main tasks. The treatment of patients is paramount. In addition, a lot of medical-scientific research is carried out at the AMC. The third main task is to provide education and training.
