Spanish Society of Family and Community Medicine / Sociedad Espanola de Medicina de Familia y Comunitaria (semFYC)

Barcelona, Barcelona, Spain

The semFYC began the first steps towards its constitution in 1982 as an evolution of the active assembly movement led by the coordinator of Family and Community Medicine resident physicians; movement that had been operating since 1979, the year in which the first class of resident physicians in this specialty began its formation. This evolution was carried out thanks to a group aware of the need to maintain contact and discussion forums for the successive promotions of specialists in Family and Community Medicine.

The constitution of the semFYC, proposed and formally assumed by the assembly of the MIR collective of Family and Community Medicine, was presented during a long strike and during the confinement of said collective in June 1982. The main demand was the creation of health centers. A first Management Board was established, chaired by Dr. Julio Sánchez Salvador, which failed to complete the constitution of the Company due to the discrepancies that arose regarding the structure that said Company should have.

In December 1983, during the annual congress, held in Granada, a new Management Board was constituted, chaired by Dr. Asunción Prieto Orzanco, which finally achieved the formal and legal constitution of semFYC, with the approval of its Statutes and the celebration of the first elections in 1984. In these, Dr. Prieto Orzanco is elected as the first president of the semFYC. The Company adopts a transitory structure of a non-federal nature, although with wide autonomy of action for the different Federated Societies, which would culminate in the legalization of all the Autonomous Societies.
