University Hospital of Bellvitge / Hospital Universitari de Bellvitge (HUB)

Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain

History of the University Hospital of Bellvitge :
In 1972, the present Kings of Spain inaugurated in what until then they had been fields of cultivation of l'Hospitalet de Llobregat (Barcelonès) the current University Hospital of Bellvitge.

Since that year, the institution's history has been continuously evolving towards excellence, with the difficulties and challenges of a large, third-level hospital of these characteristics.

The University Hospital of Bellvitge (HUB) belongs to the Catalan Institute of Health (ICS), a public company with its own legal personality and functional autonomy and management that provides comprehensive primary and hospital care services throughout the Catalan territory. It was opened in 1972, and its geographical location is the neighbourhood of Bellvitge, in the municipality of L'Hospitalet de Llobregat.

The HUB is one of the only 5 hospitals in Catalonia accredited as third level centers, the highest level of complexity, which allows it to cater to patients that require the highest technology, such as heart surgery, surgery thoracic, neurosurgery or transplants. It has all the medical and surgical specialties, except paediatrics and obstetrics.

The Hospital is immersed in an ambitious growth project, with a set of works that will allow it to expand its facilities in more than 40,000 m2. In October 2014 a new building was opened that welcomes, on the floor, the Emergency Service. On the first floor of this building are the Medical Day Hospital, the Major Outpatient Surgery Unit (UCMA), the neurophysiology departments and the Multiple Sclerosis Unit. On the second floor there is the Emergency Resuscitation Unit and in the third, seven operating theaters are being equipped to perform Major Outpatient Surgery.
