Adam Balen works as an NHS full time clinician and in 2004 was awarded a personal (honorary) chair in recognition of his research by the University of Leeds. Adam Balen is one of four consultants at the Leeds Centre for Reproductive Medicine (LCRM) which performs approximately 2000 IVF cycles per year and the full range of fertility treatments. The private Genesis Reproductive Health Clinic also operates out of the LCRM.For many years Adam Balen has had a particular interest in the causes and management of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) – covering the full spectrum from the effects of the syndrome during adolescence and adult life on the menstrual cycle, fertility, body weight and cosmetic aspects together with the fundamental effects that PCOS may have on quality of life and long term health. He has been the only UK gynaecologist to sit on the international consensus groups on the definition and management of PCOS, which have written major guidelines since 2003. He is currently the Chair of the World Health Organisation (WHO) Expert Working Group on the management of PCOS for the Global Taskforce on Infertility. He is the chair-elect of The British Fertility Society (to commence January 2015).
