Alan Hartman, MD, oversees one of New York State’s busiest and most successful cardiothoracic programs. The combined Department of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery includes North Shore University Hospital, LIJ Medical Center and Southside Hospital. Under Dr. Hartman’s leadership, Northwell has established a cardiac surgery program at Southside in February 2011. During the first year, the Southside cardiac team performed more than 300 surgeries.

Dr. Hartman, who joined Northwell in 2002 as chair of cardiothoracic surgery, is also one of New York’s most active open-heart surgeons, with an annual caseload of about 230. He is routinely ranked in New York State Department of Health reports on cardiac surgery as having among the state’s best outcomes.

His clinical interests include aortic aneurysm surgery, pulmonary embolectomy, valve repair, minimally invasive surgery, coronary bypass surgery, and mechanical assist devices. He is chair and associate professor of cardiovascular and thoracic surgery at the Zucker School of Medicine.

Prior to joining Northwell, Dr. Hartman was an attending cardiothoracic surgeon at Winthrop University Hospital and the former chief of cardiothoracic surgery at Stony Brook University Hospital. Dr. Hartman is a fellow of many prestigious surgical societies including the American College of Surgeons, the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, the American College of Cardiology, the Society of Critical Care Medicine and the American College of Chest Physicians.
