Alfio Spina MD

Doctor Alfio Spina is a neurosurgeon at the Neurosurgery Unit of the IRCCS San Raffaele Hospital directed by Professor Pietro Mortini. After graduating in Medicine and Surgery at the University of Catania in 2009, he specialized with honors in Neurosurgery at the Vita-Salute the San Raffaele University of Milan in 2016. Among his training experiences abroad, Dr. Spina was Visiting Faculty at the Department of Neurosurgery and Harvey H. Ammermann Microsurgical Laboratory of George Washington University, Washington DC, the USA for the study of microsurgical anatomy and the development of new surgical approaches; he also completed a training period at the Neurosurgery Department of the Regional Hospital of Lugano, Switzerland.

He regularly participates in refresher courses in the neurosurgery field and in national and international conferences as a speaker. He was Faculty Member for several neurosurgical courses in Italy, Europe, and the USA. He is a member of the “European Association of Neurosurgical Societies” (EANS), “The Leksell Society” and the SNO, society of “Hospital Neurological Sciences”. He obtained the national scientific qualification as a second-level professor in 2021. Dr. Spina is the winner of the EANS Research Grant in 2021.

Dr. Spina is the author of more than 50 scientific articles in exclusively international peer-reviewed journals and of book chapters in English. He is a reviewer for the major scientific journals in the sector. Its current H-Index is 11.
