Dr. Barbara McAneny is an oncologist/hematologist practicing in Albuquerque, NM, and chief executive officer of New Mexico Oncology Hematology Consultants, Ltd., and New Mexico Cancer Center. She is a past president of the American Medical Association (AMA) and is the first oncologist ever to hold that position.
For most of her career, Dr. McAneny has played a leading role in advocating for the well-being of patients with cancer beyond their disease state and treatment and has also advocated for positive changes in cancer policy such as payment reform. She holds the distinction of having created the Community Oncology Medical Home (COME HOME) Model, a patient-centered model of care to improve the quality and continuity of cancer care, and also founded the New Mexico Cancer Center Foundation which assists cancer patients with their non-medical needs.
Dr. McAneny graduated magna cum laude from the University of Minnesota in 1973 and with honors from the University of Iowa College of Medicine in 1977. She completed her residency in internal medicine at the University of Iowa in 1980 and her fellowship in hematology/oncology at the University of New Mexico in 2003.
