Carl did his undergraduate studies in Psychology at Curtin University and completed postgraduate training in Clinical Psychology at Murdoch University with a research emphasis in neuropsychology. He gained eligibility for entry to the Australian College of Clinical Psychologists in 2002.

Since then he has specialized in practice and applied research in behavioral medicine with an emphasis on the treatment and management of chronic diseases, and has published several articles in peer-reviewed journals.

He has worked with the Pain Medicine Units at Fremantle Hospital and Fiona Stanley Hospital and was a member of the WA Musculoskeletal Health Network Spinal Pain Working Group which designed the current treatment guidelines for the management of spinal pain in WA. He was involved with the development and deployment of the award-winning STEPS Pain Management program which is now seen as a leading model in chronic pain treatment. He has worked with the Centre for Inflammatory Bowel Diseases at Fremantle and Fiona Stanley Hospitals and is the consulting Clinical Psychologist within the Immunology and Infectious Disease Unit at Fiona Stanley Hospital
