Dr. Carlo Perricone is a Researcher of Rheumatology at the University of Perugia. He graduated in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Rome Tor Vergata at the age of 23 (at the time, the second youngest to graduate from a Public University in Italy) with honors, Specialist in Rheumatology with honors at Sapienza University of Rome (youngest rheumatologist in Italy), Ph.D. in Hematological, Immunological and Rheumatological Sciences with honors at the Sapienza University of Rome, Masters in Translational Medicine in Rheumatology at the University of Trieste.
His scientific activity has focused on the study of autoimmune diseases with particular regard to rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, and antiphospholipid antibody syndrome. His studies investigated the role of NK cells and the complementary system in the pathogenesis of autoimmune diseases and the interactions between genetics and multifactorial diseases. Furthermore, his scientific activity has focused on the study of ultrasound imaging in rheumatic diseases. Since 2010 he has been a professor of musculoskeletal ultrasound for the European League Against Rheumatism and for the Italian Society of Rheumatology. Founder and member of the Commission of the Youth Group of the Italian Society of Rheumatology (SIRYoung).
