Carol Kurtz Bates MD

Carol Bates, M.D. Received her undergraduate degree from Dartmouth College and her medical degree from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. She completed her internal medicine residency and chief residency at Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland, Oregon. After 6 months as a volunteer physician in rural Kenya, she came to Beth Israel Hospital in Boston in 1988 as a primary care internist. Her practice and teaching are focused on women’s health.

She served as Primary Care Program Director at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center from 1992–2011. She received an A. Clifford Barger Mentoring Award from HMS in 2006. She has held leadership roles in the Society of General Internal Medicine as annual scientific program co-chair, regional president, education committee chair, and treasurer. She received the SGIM Elnora Rhodes Service Award in 2013. She is co-editor-in-chief of the Journal of General Internal Medicine.

As Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs at Harvard Medical School, she manages the process of promotion to Assistant and Associate Professor for circa 500 faculty per year and co-directs an orientation program, a leadership course, and a faculty fellowship program. She is a representative of the dean of the Joint Committee on the Status of Women. She serves as the Title IX coordinator for HMS faculty. She is the chair of the steering committee of the Group on Women in Medicine and Science for the Association of American Medical Colleges.
