D. Scott Kreiner MD

Dr. Scott Kreiner is a specialist in physical medicine and rehabilitation, also known as a physiatrist. He is a diplomat of the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and a Fellow of the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. He grew up in Arizona and attended Camelback High School, then went to college at the University of Arizona, where he completed his Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering in the program of Biomechanical Engineering.

Following his undergraduate studies, Dr. Kreiner stayed in Tucson and enrolled in medical school at the University of Arizona College of Medicine. Knowing in medical school that he was interested in musculoskeletal medicine, he decided to become a physiatrist. His internship was spent at Tucson Medical Center. Then he moved to Dallas,where he completed his residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the University of Texas at Southwestern. In July of 1999, he returned to Arizona as an associate, and later a partner with Dr. John Kozak at Ahwatukee Sports & Spine.

Dr. Kreiner is trained in physiatric skills. He specializes innon-surgical management of sports injuries, cumulative trauma disorders, arthritis, and any other type of injury to the (neuro)musculoskeletal system. Diagnostically, he is residency-trained in nerve conduction studies and electromyography. He also interprets CT scans, x-rays, and MRIs of the musculoskeletal system. His treatment arena includes management of therapy,medications, trigger point injections, ultrasound-guided peripheral joint and soft tissue injections, fluoroscopically-guided interventional spine procedures, and Viscosupplementation (supplemental hyaluronate for knee andsometimes hip OA) injections.

Dr. Kreiner served 3 years as the Medical Director of the RehabCare Unit at Mesa General Hospital and nearly 3 years as the Medical Director of the Acute Rehabilitation Unit at St. Luke's Hospital. He has also been the Medical Director at Sun Lakes Therapy, a certified out-patient rehabilitation facility. He has a strong interest in Sports Medicine and Interventional Procedures. He has been the Team Physician for multiple highschools, including Marcos de Niza, Desert Vista and Dobson. He has also worked at the collegiate level with Southern Methodist University (SMU). In addition, he has provided medical coverage for multiple other sporting events including marathons, semi-professional and professional soccer tournaments, wrestlingtournaments, and triathlons. He continues today working with all caliber athletes. He has a particular interest in golf and golf-related injuries.

Dr. Kreiner also is dedicated to teaching and training other physicians as well. He is the Fellowship Director at Ahwatukee Sports & Spine and continues to teach national courses on interventional spine procedures. He also has a deep interest in evidence-based medicine and has been the Co-Chairman the Evidence Based Guidelines Committee for the North American Spine Society since 2009. In this capacity he has co-authored multiple guidelines on the diagnosis and treatment of a variety of spine conditions. He also is the Chairman of the Appropriate Use Criteria committee for the Spine Intervention Society.

In 2014 he became the Co-Chairman of the Coverage Committee for the North American Spine Society. In this capacity he helps write coverage policies to be used by payors and interested parties to appropriately reimburse for or restrict spine-related procedures.

Outside of medicine, Dr. Kreiner delights in spending time with his wife and three children. He has coached baseball and football, and when not busy with these commitments enjoys golfing, mountain biking, and snow skiing.
