Dr. Begley is a consultant cardiologist and specialist in cardiac rhythm management at Royal Papworth Hospital and is the current Divisional Clinical Director for Cardiology.
He graduated from the University of Edinburgh in 1994. Following a period of general training in Scotland, he completed a period of clinical research in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland, USA, and was awarded the degree of Doctor of Medicine by the University of Edinburgh.
He trained in general cardiology in the northern rotation based at the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle and James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough where he completed subspecialty training in cardiac electrophysiology and device therapy. He was appointed a consultant at Papworth in 2007. He was the clinical lead for cardiac electrophysiology and device therapy between 2011 and 2016.
He has extensive experience in all aspects of adult cardiac electrophysiology including the ablation of complex arrhythmias, device implantation, and extraction techniques. Special interests include the ablation of ventricular tachycardias related to ischaemic heart disease and cardiomyopathies. His research interests are related to the ablation of complex arrhythmias.
He is heavily involved in medical education at all levels and is currently an Undergraduate Program Director in Cardiology, educational supervisor for foundation trainees, and University of Cambridge Senior Clinical Tutor. In addition, he has been involved with the British Heart Rhythm Society Accreditation Examination Committee since it was significantly revised in 2010.
