David Bernstein, MD, has a primary research interest in the field of liver diseases, with most of his work concentrated on developing new treatments for chronic hepatitis C. He is researching new diagnostics and therapies in hepatitis B, fatty liver disease, primary biliary cholangitis, primary sclerosing cholangitis, hereditary hemochromatosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma. He is the author of more than 100 publications, and 10 book chapters and has been the principal investigator in over 250 clinical trials. His work has been published in prestigious journals, such as the New England Journal of Medicine and The Lancet.

Dr. Bernstein is active in many national and international societies and has held elective office in many of them. He is the former president of the Bockus International Society of Gastroenterology and the New York Gastrointestinal Society. He served for six years as the American College of Gastroenterology governor for Long Island. He has served on numerous committees of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases and the American College of Gastroenterology. He is also a member of the European Society for the Study of Liver Diseases and the Asia-Pacific Association for the Study of Liver Diseases. He is a fellow of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases, the American College of Gastroenterology, the American Gastroenterological Association, and the American College of Physicians.

Dr. Bernstein has been involved in shaping public policy and education regarding liver diseases. He serves as a special consultant to the New York State Department of Health, and in that role, has helped develop and implement New York state’s five-year Strategic Plan for Viral Hepatitis, as well as led the group developing guidelines to be used for the treatment of hepatitis C in New York state. He regularly leads telemedicine conferences for public health providers, prison health providers, and federally qualified health care centers to educate these providers, and has made himself available as a special consultant to these centers for individual case questions.
