David R. Owens CBE MD FRCP, Emeritus Professor of Diabetes at Cardiff University, and Professor of Diabetes at Swansea University’s College of Medicine. Professor Owens has been involved in the management of diabetes and related research activities for more than 35years. His early work regarding insulin was published in a single-author book titled ‘Human Insulin, Clinical Pharmacology’ published in 1986. Since his primary interests include the pathophysiology of glucose intolerance ie the Natural history of type 2 diabetes. He also has a keen interest in all micro-vascular complications of diabetes especially diabetic retinopathy and introduced the first community-wide National Diabetic Retinopathy Screening Service for Wales in 2002. He is involved in introducing Retinopathy Screening services in a number of countries and collaborations to automate and enhance eye fundus images with colleagues at iPRN, Lyon. He is also interested in diabetic foot care and has been involved in setting up a course and teaching on the subject. Professor Owens is a member of the Association of Physicians of Great Britain and Ireland and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and also a Fellow of the Institute of Biology. He was one of the originators of the ‘online’ Cardiff Postgraduate Diabetes Course. and then became involved with the Leicester University and University of South Wales postgraduate courses in diabetes. He has published about 450 articles and in 2002 Professor Owens was awarded the CBE (Commander of the British Empire) for his services to diabetes and the National Health Service.
