Dr. Dietger W. Niederwieser is a Professor of Medicine and the Head of the Division of Hematology and Oncology at the University Hospital Leipzig, Germany. Professor Niederwieser obtained his doctorate of medicine at the University of Innsbruck, Austria, where he continued to dedicate much of his career.
He became the Head of the Bone Marrow Transplantation Unit and Clinical Immunobiology at the University of Innsbruck in 1989 and Associate Professor of Medicine, before moving to the University Hospital Leipzig, where he became the Chairman of the Department of Hematology, Oncology, and Hemostaseology.
Professor Niederwieser has authored over 500 publications in peer-review journals on cellular immune response mechanisms starting from the lab to the bedside and has held a number of society memberships, including Board Member of the Austrian Society of Hematology and Oncology and Member of the European Haematology Association. Professor Niederwieser was the Secretary of the Chronic Leukemia Working Party of the European Bone Marrow Transplantation Group (EBMT) between the Chairman of the Chronic Leukemia Working Party of the European Society of Blood and Marrow Transplantation (EBMT). He was appointed as President of the EBMT in 2006 and as President of the WBMT.
