Dr. Edward Dwayne Karateew is a Clinical Professor in the Department of Periodontics. He received his DDS degree from Columbia University School of Dental and Oral Surgery and Specialty certificates in Periodontics and Fixed Prosthodontics from the University of Pennsylvania.

Dr. Karateew has given numerous presentations primarily in implant dentistry in over 20 countries. Currently, Dr. Karateew is serving as the Chairman of the Charitable Grants Committee of the Academy of Osseointegration (AO) as well as being a member of the AO Finance Committee. Recently, Dr. Karateew was elected as a Fellow of the Academy of Osseointegration.

Within the American Academy of Periodontology, Dr. Karateew maintains a position as the Chair, of the Program Directors Committee and also has a position on the Education Committee. He is a recognized international expert and authority on implant dentistry and osseointegration, having been invited to participate in an international implant consensus conference in 2018 as well as most recently serving as the Scientific Chair for the Academy of Osseointegration 2021 Annual Meeting.

Dr. Karateew's research interests include characterizing the sulcular epithelium around implants afflicted with peri-implantitis and clinical applications and outcomes measurements related to the clinical practice of Periodontics.
