Frank Berthold is Professor of Paediatrics at the University of Cologne, Germany. He received his doctorate in Dresden, 1977, and in 1982–83 he was at the University of Philadelphia, USA, with Professor Audrey Evans and Dr Roger Kennett, following which Professor Berthold was awarded his PhD in Giessen in 1985, and his lifetime Professorship in Cologne, 1986. Professor Berthold specialised in paediatric oncology and haematology, and palliative medicine, with a main scientific interest in clinical and translational research in neuroblastoma. He was Chairman of the German Neuroblastoma Group from 1985 to 2014, and in 2006–2008 President of the International Advances in Neuroblastoma Research Association and Chairman of the Advances in Neuroblastoma Research Congress, held in Cologne, 2014. Following retirement in 2014 Professor Berthold holds a research position at the University of Cologne and is conducting phase I/II trials in neuroblastoma patients. Through the Centre for Integrated Oncology Professor Berthold has successfully led many national therapy optimisation clinical trials conducted by the Society for Paediatric Oncology and Haematology (GPOH).
