Giovanni Appendino is a Professor of Chemistry at the University of Eastern Piedmont, Faculty of Pharmacy, Novara (Italy). His research activity is focused on the isolation, chemical modification, and total synthesis of bioactive natural products of plant origin. In recognition of his studies, he was awarded the Rhône-Poulenc Rorer Award of the Phytochemical Society of Europe in 1991, the Medaglia Quilico of the Societa Chimica Italiana in 2009, and the Bruker Award of the Phytochemical Society of Europe in 2014. In 2018 he was elected to the Accademia di XL, the Italian Academy of Sciences.
Giovanni Appendino has authored over 350 research articles and 15 book chapters on the chemistry and bioactivity of plant natural products. He is Editor-in-chief of the Journal Fitoterapia, and a member of the Advisory Board of other journals in the area, including Natural Products Reports, Progress in the Chemistry of Organic Natural Products, and Acta Pharmaceutica Sinica B. His involvement in cannabinoid research dates from 2002 and has led to discoveries of relevance for the exploitation of the medicinal potential of the plant, including a novel class of phytocannabinoids and novel chemistry for cannabinoid-based drug discovery programs.
