Henry B. Burch is Professor of Medicine and Chair, Endocrinology Division at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. Dr. Burch also serves as Endocrinology Consultant to the U.S. Army Surgeon General. He completed undergraduate training at University of California at Los Angeles, graduating Magna Cum Laude with a BS in Biochemistry, and attended medical school at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Maryland. He completed internal medicine training at Letterman Army Medical Center in San Francisco, California and completed fellowship training in Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center with Leonard Wartofsky and Kenneth D. Burman. Dr Burch has research interests in the area of hyperthyroidism and designed the Burch-Wartofsky point score for the diagnosis of “thyroid storm.” He has performed both bench top and clinical research in the etiology and management of Graves’ ophthalmopathy and Graves’ hyperthyroidism, respectively. Dr. Burch served as guest editor for an issue of Endocrinology and Metabolism Clinics of North America, entitled “Consultative Endocrinology,” and served as Endocrinology book editor for MKSAP-15. Dr. Burch recently served on the committee for the development of Thyrotoxicosis Clinical Practice Guidelines, co-sponsored by the American Thyroid Association and the American Association of Clinical Endocrinology, as published in June, 2011. Dr. Burch continues to serve on active duty in the U.S. Army, where he is a Colonel in the Medical Corps.
