Dr. H. Richard McDonald was born in New York City and raised in Southern California. He received his undergraduate degree from Stanford University and his medical degree from UCLA Medical School. He completed his ophthalmology residency at the University of California San Francisco and his retinal fellowship at the Medical College of Wisconsin (Milwaukee).
Dr. McDonald started his career as a retina specialist in San Francisco in 1985 and is the senior partner at West Coast Retina Medical Group. He serves as a Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at the California Pacific Medical Center, Department of Ophthalmology, and Director of the CPMC Retina Fellowship Program. He is the President of the San Francisco Retina Foundation.
Dr. McDonald has published over 350 articles, editorials, and book chapters, and has given 500 presentations, lectures, and courses. He has given five named lectures and has participated in many national studies as Principal Investigator. He is also a member of many retina groups, including the Macula Society, Retina Society, American Society of Retina Specialists, the Gass Club, and is Co-Founder of the Pacific Retina Club. He currently serves as the President of the Macula Society.
