Dr Ian Smith is a chest physician specialising in ventilatory failure and sleep medicine with expertise in weaning, domiciliary ventilation, sleep apnoea and non-respiratory sleep disorders including narcolepsy and parasomnias. He is the Director of Papworth Hospital’s Respiratory Support and Sleep Centre (RSSC), the largest sleep centre in the UK and the first accredited by the European and British Sleep Societies. He co-founded the regional MND care network. He holds a general respiratory clinic at Addenbrookes hospital.

He is Deputy Medical Director leading on Research and Development and has secured new funding and established a number of dedicated research posts at Papworth. In his own research Dr Smith has supervised candidates to higher degrees and contributed to a number of successful grant applications. He has supported colleagues across the UK as an independent chair / member of research study committees. He is a member of the ERS workforce on therapies for OSA and chair of the BTS Specialist Advisory Group for sleep apnoea and has recently co-authored the BTS position statement on driving and sleep apnoea.

Dr Smith is an Associate Lecturer to the University of Cambridge and has held a number of key educational posts including Programme Director for respiratory medicine in East Anglia, Attachment Director for respiratory and cardiology undergraduate training and Clinical Tutor for the Royal College of Physicians. As Clinical Director of Thoracic Services he oversaw expansion in each of the subspecialties, establishment of the Interstitial Lung Disease Service and appointment of the first University Lecturer at Papworth.
