Dr. Sultan earned his medical degree at Weill Cornell and completed his general surgery residency at Johns Hopkins, followed by a cardiothoracic surgery and advanced aortic and minimally invasive cardiac surgery fellowships at the University of Pennsylvania.

Dr. Sultan’s clinical expertise includes surgical management of aortic aneurysms, complex aortic reconstructions, transcatheter aortic valve replacement, surgical repair or replacement of aortic, mitral, and tricuspid valves, and minimally invasive heart valve surgery.

Since being recruited to UPMC in 2016, Dr. Sultan has been appointed to several leadership roles within the UPMC Heart and Vascular Institute, including Director, Center for Thoracic Aortic Disease; Surgical Director, of the Center for Heart Valve Disease; and Senior Director, of Clinical Transformation and Quality.

He is currently an Associate Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and has authored over 200 peer-reviewed manuscripts, delivered over 80 invited talks nationally and is a Principal Investigator on several industry studies and holds a University of Pittsburgh Vascular Medicine Institute and Department of Defense grant.

He is the associate program director for the cardiothoracic surgery residency and has won multiple teaching awards from the University of Pittsburgh SOM. He has served in leadership positions for the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, the American Heart Association, and the American College of Cardiology.
