Jalesh N. Panicker MD, MBBS, DM, MRCP

Dr. Panicker is Consultant Neurologist in Uro-Neurology at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, and Honorary Senior Lecturer at the UCL Institute of Neurology, Queen Square, London. He qualified in 1996 and subsequently trained in General Medicine and Neurology. He became involved in the management of patients with neurogenic bladder dysfunction early in his career when running a neurorehabilitation service. He has since developed and maintained an academic and clinical interest in Uro-Neurology.

His primary interest is in understanding the neural control of the bladder and how it is affected in neurological disease. Dr. Panicker works full time in the Department of Uro-Neurology and has a large clinical workload in this tertiary referral unit involved in the management of bladder and sexual dysfunction in patients with neurological diseases. Most of the patients he sees in his Uro-neurology clinics have Multiple sclerosis, but he also has a particular interest in patients with Parkinson’s Disease, Cauda equina syndrome and unexplained urinary retention in young women, many of whom ultimately are found to have a primary disorder of sphincter relaxation (Fowler’s syndrome).

He often sees patients with unexplained bladder and sexual dysfunction referred for a neurological opinion. He carries out pelvic neurophysiology, more often urethral or anal sphincter EMG. Together with a urologist, urogynecologist, gastroenterologist and nurses, the Uro-Neurology team provides a comprehensive approach for managing bladder, bowel and sexual dysfunction in patients with a variety of neurological disorders. He is involved in the training of medical students, junior doctors, nurses, and MSc students and actively undertakes clinical research. His publications include more than 65 articles in peer-reviewed journals and 15 book chapters. In 2010, he co-edited a textbook “Pelvic Organ Dysfunction in Neurological Disease” together with Professor Clare Fowler and Dr. Anton Emmanuel.
