Dr. James Parsons attended Duke University Medical School and completed his Internship in Family Medicine and his Residency in Radiation Oncology at the University of Florida. He remained on the Faculty at the University of Florida for 18 years where he was a Full Professor and where he held the John P. Cofrin Professorship of Radiation Therapy, and later was named the Rodney R Million Professor of Radiation Oncology. In addition to seeing patients at a busy clinical practice, he had extensive teaching responsibilities for medical students and residents and for many years was the Director of the University of Florida Shands Teaching Hospital Cancer Committee. His areas of clinical specialization include head and neck malignancies, soft-tissue sarcoma, genitourinary malignancy, and breast cancer. He also has a special interest in a variety of skin cancer types. He holds certifications in Stereotactic Radiosurgery (brain and body) and Cyberknife Radiosurgery. He served for numerous years as an Oral Board Examiner for the American College of Radiology for Head and Neck and GU Cancers as well as on the American Board of Radiology Resident Review Committee. He also served as Assistant Editor of ASTRO’s official journal, the International Journal of Radiation Oncology Biology and Physics for approximately 15 years. Dr. Parsons has been the first or co-author of 200+ peer-reviewed articles on the topics of head and neck cancer, skin cancer, soft tissue sarcomas, bladder cancer, prostate cancer, radiation dose schemes, thyroid cancer, and complications of radiation therapy. He has written approximately 50 book chapters, is a co-editor of “Management of Head and Neck Cancer, a Multidisciplinary Approach,” and has lectured extensively throughout the US and abroad. He has been a frequent presenter at national meetings including ASTRO and RSNA, where he presented numerous refresher courses on head and neck cancer to his peers. Dr. Parsons is currently in private practice at GenesisCare in Palm Beach County, Florida, and has been named to a list of Best Doctors in America (1992 to present).
