Javier Abel Menendez PhD

Javier A. Menendez received his Bachelor of biological sciences at the University of Oviedo, Asturies, Spain. He received a master's degree and doctorate in biochemistry and molecular biology at the Complutense University, Madrid, Spain (2001) followed by a postdoctoral fellowship to work in the laboratory of Ruth Lupu at the Life Science Division in the Ernest Orlando Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL; Berkeley University, California, USA). He has been a scientist at the Evanston Northwestern Healthcare Research Institute, an assistant professor at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, and a full member of the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center of Northwestern University (Chicago, Illinois, USA). 

In 2006 he became a member of the Spanish Institute of Health Carlos III at the Catalan Institute of Oncology in Girona, Spain, where he continues his research as coordinator of the Translational Research Unit (Metabolism & Cancer Group). His research focus is on how bioenergetics metabolism and autophagy molecularly influence human carcinogenesis and the development of new preventive and therapeutic strategies based on the aberrant metabolic phenotype of tumor cells.
