Dr. Joanne Hickey holds the Patricia L. Starck/PARTNERS Professorship in Nursing at the University of Texas health Science Center at Houston (UTHSC-H) School of Nursing. She received a baccalaureate degree in nursing from Boston College, a master’s of science degree in nursing from the University of Rhode Island, a master’s of arts degree in counseling from Rhode Island College, a PhD degree from the University of Texas at Austin, and a post-master’s certificate as a nurse practitioner from Duke University. She is certified by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) as an acute care nurse practitioner, and the American Board of Neuroscience Nursing as a certified neuroscience registered nurse.
The adult neuroscience patient population has been the focus of Dr. Hickey’s advanced practice, research, and publications. She has serviced in the neuroscience clinical areas in St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital as an advanced practice nurse and The Methodist’s Hospital as the Scurlock Nurse Scholar. Dr. Hickey is the author of The Clinical Practice of Neurological and Neurosurgical Nursing now in its sixth edition and numerous articles on neuroscience topics. She is a frequent speaker at national and international conferences.
