Dr. Jorg J. Goronzy specializes in the treatment of immunological and rheumatic diseases with an expertise in the care of patients with giant cell arteritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Before coming to Stanford in 2009, he was the Mason I. Lowance, M.D. Professor of Medicine at Emory University, Atlanta. From 1990 to 2003, he was on the faculty of the Mayo Clinic.
Jorg J. Goronzy received his medical degree from the University of Aachen and his Dr. med. from the University of Bonn in Germany in 1979. He completed a Dr. habil degree in Medical Sciences at the University of Heidelberg in 1988. He did clinical training as a resident at Hannover Medical School in Germany and completed a fellowship in Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology at Stanford University Medical Center in California. From 1990 to 2003, Dr. Goronzy was on the faculty of the Mayo Medical and Graduate School, where during the last four years he was Professor of Medicine and Immunology.
At the Mayo Clinic, he served as the Codirector of the Clinical Immunology and Immunotherapeutics Program in the Department of Medicine. In 2004, Dr. Goronzy joined the Emory University School of Medicine as Professor of Medicine and Codirector of the Kathleen B. and Mason I. Lowance Center for Human Immunology. Dr. Goronzy is a leading researcher in the field of immunobiology of autoimmune disease.
