Dr. Joseph R. Berger is a Professor of Neurology and Chief of the Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Division of the Department of Neurology at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. A graduate of the Jefferson Medical College, where he was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, Dr. Berger completed residencies at Georgetown University Hospital and Jackson Memorial Hospital. He is board-certified in internal medicine and neurology. 

His clinical expertise encompasses AIDS, MS, encephalopathy, neuroimmunology, neurovirology, and optic nerve disorders. His clinical practice is complemented by his research interests that include progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy, neurological complications of HIV/AIDS, MS, and other inflammatory disorders of the brain. 

Dr. Berger has a longstanding interest in international health and was one of the founding members of People-to-People, an organization for HIV/AIDS care and education in East Africa. He has held a variety of other leadership roles, especially in the International Society of NeuroVirology and the American Academy of Neurology. He is an honorary member of the Columbian Neurological Association.
