Kambiz Kalantari, MD, is an associate professor of medicine in the Division of Nephrology. He is a dedicated educator and enjoys teaching medical students, residents, and fellow physicians. He has been recognized with several teaching awards, including the Jefferson Scholars Foundation Award for Excellence in Teaching. He is the medical director of the dialysis unit at University Hospital (inpatient dialysis) and has served as director of the Nephrology Fellowship Training Program since 2012.
Dr. Kalantari’s areas of clinical interest include diseases of glomeruli (glomerulonephritis, nephrotic syndrome), and potassium, sodium, and acid-base disorders. On the inpatient side, he has focused his clinical work on the management of kidney diseases and dialysis in the intensive care units. He is experienced in ultrasound imaging of the kidney and the performance of ultrasound-assisted kidney biopsies. He also conducts research in ultrasound.
Dr. Kalantari was born in Tehran, Iran, and earned his medical degree from Shiraz University. After medical school, he worked for five years as a primary care physician and a public health official in rural southeast Iran. This experience offered him an opportunity to work with a significantly underserved patient population and appreciate how integral healthcare is to patient wellbeing. In 1996, he moved to Maryland to complete a residency in internal medicine at Prince George's Hospital Center. He joined UVA Nephrology as a fellow, before joining the UVA faculty in 2002.
