Prof Karen Kirkby is the Director of Science for the Surrey Ion Beam Centre (IBC), an EPSRC national facility, which was jointly awarded the Queens Anniversary Prize in 2002. The IBC works with 50 Universities and research institutions and 35 different industrial concerns across the UK and internationally and supports in excess of £70M of EPSRC grants. Karen led the team that brought in a prestigious grant from the Wolfson Foundation to build a vertical nanobeam for cell irradiation studies using charged particles. This radical new facility underpins work in the UK and Europe on particle therapy, a novel type of radiotherapy, for which the government has recently announced 3 new centres which will come on line in about 5 years time.
