Karl is the current Honorary Chair of the Association for Respiratory Technology and Physiology (ARTP), the professional body representing respiratory and sleep physiologists/scientists across the UK. He has been an RCCP member since it’s inception. After completing his undergraduate degree in Biomedical Science at King’s College London he became a respiratory and sleep medical technical officer in the Lung Function Unit at the Royal Brompton Hospital. He then went on to complete a PhD in respiratory and haematological medicine at Guy’s, King’s and St. Thomas’ School of Medicine investigating the respiratory complications associated with sickle cell disease and presented his research worldwide.
On completing his PhD Karl was appointed Chief Clinical Respiratory Physiologist at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, part of Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. He has since been appointed the Head of Joint Respiratory Physiology Services covering both Papworth and Addenbrooke’s Hospitals and has been tasked with merging the two respiratory physiology services into one cohesive Cambridge Respiratory Physiology service providing lung function to both hospitals in time for the move of Papworth Hospital onto the Cambridge Biomedical Campus.
