Laurie Carter received her D.D.S. degree and a Certificate of Proficiency in Oral Pathology from the State University of New York at Buffalo School of Dentistry. She also holds both M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in Experimental Pathology from the University at Buffalo School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. She is a Fellow of the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology and the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology.
Dr. Carter was employed for 17 years by the University of Buffalo School of Dental Medicine, leaving there in 2000 at the rank of Associate Professor with titles of Director of the Oral and Maxillofacial Diagnostic Imaging Clinic and Director of Patient Admissions. She has been employed at Virginia Commonwealth University School of Dentistry since 2000, where she is currently Professor and Director of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology and Director of Advanced Dental Education.
Laurie has over thirty publications in peer reviewed literature (24 first authored) to her credit, as well as three book chapters. She has served on the editorial board of Journal of Dental Education, Implant Dentistry, Journal of Investigative Surgery, and Oral Surgery Oral Medicine Oral Pathology Oral Radiology Endodontology. She serves as reviewer for DentoMaxillofacial Radiology, Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Angle Orthodontist, Journal of Dental Research and Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry. Her research interests include correlation of radiographic patterns of disease with histopathology, biochemical measurements and biologic behavior as well as correlation of calcified atheromatous plaque in the carotid vasculature as detected on panoramic radiographs with risk for stroke.
