Dr L. Vermeulen (1984) has been named professor by special appointment of Molecular Oncology at the University of Amsterdam’s Faculty of Medicine (AMC-UvA). The chair was designated on behalf of the Society for the Promotion of Physics, Medicine and Surgery (GNGH). Louis Vermeulen’s research focuses on colorectal carcinoma and identifying various subtypes of this disease, which is important for the development of new medicines. In addition, he studies stem cell dynamics in the healthy bowel and examines how these cells develop into intestinal cancers.

As professor by special appointment, his focus areas will be identifying strategies for classifying bowel cancer patients and developing subtype-specific treatment methods. He will additionally develop preclinical models for evaluating the efficacy of new strategies for treatment and prevention, by applying quantitative methods in combination with biological model systems.

Vermeulen teaches Bachelor’s and Master's students within the AMC’s Laboratory for Experimental Oncology and Radiobiology (LEXOR); he also supervises researchers and is involved in education at the Oncology Graduate School in Amsterdam. Vermeulen is training to be a medical specialist at the Internal Medicine/Oncology department at the AMC. He is leader of the Cancer Biology theme at VUmc-AMC Cancer Center Amsterdam.
