Professor Mahomed Yunus Suleman Moosa is currently Associate Professor, Chief Specialist, and Head of the Infectious Diseases Unit at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, a position he has held since 2004. He graduated in medicine (MBChB ) in 1986, followed by an FCP (SA) qualification in 1992, both from the University of Natal. He obtained his Ph.D. in Immunology and Microbiology in 2003 from Wayne State University (Michigan, USA).
To date, has made tremendous contributions to the scientific body of knowledge. His early research investigations focused on the management of fungal infections in immunosuppressed persons. Later he also did clinical research on HIV and TB. In total, he has so far published more than 17 journal articles and is currently conducting a study on antiretroviral drug resistance in KwaZulu-Natal.
Professor Moosa has held many leadership positions in health institutions in South Africa, and has been a recipient of several awards and honors, including certicates of merit in Physics, Paediatrics, and Internal medicine; a Travel grant to the USA Immunology Congress from the International Union of Immunological Societies; George McCracken ID Fellow Travel Grants; and the AVENTIS Infectious Diseases Fellows Scholarship.
