Mario Rothbauer MSc

Mario Rothbauer trained in biomedical engineering & tissue engineering at the University of Applied Sciences Technikum Vienna in 2001 and completed his doctorate in biotechnology in 2015 at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna. At the Austrian Institute of Technology, he worked on the development of lab-on-a-chip systems for cell-based biomedical applications that combine cell biology, nanobiotechnology, biosensors, and materials science with microfabrication technologies. During his post-doc phase at the CellChipGroup, he worked with the Faculty of Technical Chemistry at the Vienna University of Technology on lab-on-a-chip systems for the miniaturization of organ barrier models for nanotoxicology and organ-on-a-chip systems. Currently, as university assistant and group leader of the "Orthopedic Microsystems" unit at the Karl Chiari Lab for Orthopedic Biology of the Department of Orthopaedics and Trauma Surgery at the Medical University of Vienna, he develops biomechanical joint-on-a-chip and organoid approaches for molecular musculoskeletal disease modeling, with special interest in tissue fibrosis, rheumatoid and osteoarthritis. As vice president of the European Society for Alternatives to Animal Testing (EUSAAT) and a passionate experimental in vitro scientist, he tries to follow the 3Rs principles and develops authentic and complex human tissue models as complimentary technology for in vivo animal models in biomedical and pharmaceutical research.
