Prof Mark Wilkinson is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon who works both in the NHS and privately at BMI Thornbury Hospital. He is subspecialised in hip and knee replacement in patients with both osteoarthritis and inflammatory arthritis. He has qualified and trained in Sheffield and he also undertook a PhD in the science of hip replacement at the University of Sheffield, which he completed in 2001. He received his specialist training in the treatment of hip and knee problems in Sheffield and at the Wrightington Hospital, where modern hip replacement surgery was first developed. Additionally, he undertook fellowship training in hip and knee replacement surgery in Canada, Switzerland, and Japan.

Prof Wilkinson is heavily involved in research and has a lot of expertise in the causes and the treatment of hip and knee arthritis. Furthermore, he is also interested in the mechanisms of failure of joint replacements and metabolic bone disease. Prof Wilkinson is president of the British Orthopaedic Research Society, and has received awards from the British Hip Society, the Orthopaedic Research Society in the United States, The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, and holds the British Orthopaedic Association Robert Jones Gold Medal and Association Prize. Professor Wilkinson is also an Editorial Board member for the Journal of Orthopaedic Research in the United States.
