Michael Bouvet, MD, is a board-certified surgeon who specializes in endocrine surgery and surgical oncology. He is the director of Endocrine Surgery and co-director of the Gastrointestinal Cancer Unit at UC San Diego Health. Dr Bouvet’s expertise includes performing surgery for benign and cancerous thyroid nodules; parathyroidectomy for hyperparathyroidism, Whipple procedures (pancreatoduodenectomy) for pancreatic cancer; minimally invasive robotic-assisted esophagectomy; and laparoscopic adrenal surgery. He also performs surgery for tumours of the parathyroid glands, adrenal glands, liver, oesophagus, stomach and pancreas. As a professor in the Department of Surgery, Dr Bouvet instructs students, residents and fellows at UC San Diego School of Medicine. His research focuses on fluorescence-guided surgery for gastrointestinal and endocrine tumours.

Dr Bouvet also leads the National Cancer Institute (NCI)-funded studies that aim to use fluorescence image-guided surgery to improve the visualization, detection and resection of pancreatic and colon cancer. He has co-authored more than 250 articles, and his work has appeared in the Journal of the American College of Surgeons and Cancer Research, among others. Dr Bouvet completed a fellowship in surgical oncology at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center and a residency in general surgery at UC San Diego School of Medicine. He earned his medical degree from the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle. Dr Bouvet is board-certified in general surgery. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS) and a member of numerous professional organizations, including the American Association of Endocrine Surgeons, the Society of Surgical Oncologists, and the American Thyroid Association.
