Michael Freed BA, MA, PhD, EMT-B

Michael C. Freed, Ph.D., EMT-B is the Services Research and Clinical Epidemiology Branch Chief in the Division of Services and Intervention Research at the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH). Under his guidance, the branch helps set institute research priorities, develops funding initiatives, and administers a public health-oriented research portfolio to increase access, continuity, quality, equity, efficiency, and value of mental health services to those in need. Of note, the branch also manages the dissemination and implementation research portfolio for NIMH.
Dr. Freed came to NIMH from the Department of Defense (DoD), where he served as the Research Director in the Deployment Health Clinical Center, which is the psychological health component center of the DoD Centers of Excellence for Psychological Health and Traumatic Brain Injury. He served in principal and co-investigator roles on several key epidemiological and health services research studies, as well as clinical trials. He has collaborated with senior scientists on integration of mental health interventions, including collaborative care for depression and PTSD, into primary care settings. He also assisted with DoD research priority setting and helped design a system to expedite the translation of findings from high quality research into clinical practice.
