Dr Mallin received his Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering and his Doctor of Medicine from the University of South Carolina. He completed residency in Emergency Medicine at the University of Utah School of medicine. Dr Mallin served as chief resident and was awarded the Outstanding Resident Contributor Award during his final year of residency.

Following residency, Dr. Mallin completed the inaugural fellowship in Emergency Ultrasound at the University of Utah School of Medicine. During his felowship year, he was awarded teacher of the year for the Division of Emergency Medicine. In addition to standard bedside ultrasound, he concentrated on cardiac echocardiography, took an Executive Fellowship in Perioperative Echocardiography, and sat for the National Board of Echocardiography’s Examination of Special Competence in Adult Echocardiography. Dr. Mallin now holds Testamur status with the National Board of Echocardiography.

Dr. Mallin’s research experience includes the use of bedside ultrasound in the evaluation of 1st trimester bleeding, central line placement, evaluation of volume status and hemodynamics in septic shock, and evaluation of the use of ultrasound in an emergency setting. Dr Mallin’s current research interests include the bedside application of ultrasound. He is actively conducting studies on the use of ultrasound in the diagnosis of appendicitis and kidney stones. He has AHRQ funding for the STONE study, a multicenter prospective randomized trial compairing ultrasound to CT in the diagnosis of kidney stones.
