Dr. Church graduated from the University of Edinburgh in 1994. Following postgraduate training in Edinburgh and Dundee, he gained his MRCP in 1997. His MD was awarded in 2005 for the study of the utility of thrombin injection as a treatment for bleeding peptic ulcers. He undertook a year-long clinical fellow post in London in 2004 focusing on ERCP and hepatobiliary medicine. During this time he developed a special interest in autoimmune pancreatitis and IgG4 disease.

Dr. Church a consultant gastroenterologist at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh is the professional lead for endoscopy services in Lothian. In his daily practice, he sees patients for investigation and treatment of a range of luminal gastroenterology symptoms and conditions. He performs upper and lowers gastrointestinal endoscopy for reflux symptoms, abdominal pain, alteration in bowel function, and removal of polyps.

He performs ERCP including Spyglass cholangioscopy for the investigation and treatment of diseases of the bile duct and pancreas. He has a lead role in the quality assurance of endoscopy services locally and nationally. He has expertise in general gastroenterology, functional bowel disorders, gastrointestinal bleeding, medical pancreatology, autoimmune pancreatitis, and IgG4 disease.
