Patrick Bolton has degrees in both psychology and medicine from London University and trained in medicine at Guy’s Hospital. He remained at the University of London to train in general psychiatry at St George’s Hospital, London, and in child psychiatry at the Medical Research Council Child Psychiatry Unit at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience (Kings College London) and the Maudsley Hospital. After completing his training, he was appointed Lecturer and Honorary Consultant at the Institute of Psychiatry and, subsequently, Senior Lecturer at Cambridge University.
In 2003, he was appointed Professor of Child & Adolescent Neuropsychiatry at the King's College London, Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience and Honorary Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist at the South London & Maudsley Hospital NHS trust, where he led the National Specialist Clinical Service for children with neuropsychiatric disorders, including Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD and Obsessive Compulsive Disorders (OCD).. He has authored over 300 scientific publications and is recognised as a world leading authority on childhood neurodevelopment disorders. In recognition of his achievements in clinical practice he received a prestigious NHS Platinum Merit award - the highest award possible. His research has focussed on identifying the causes of autism and related disorders of social function and communication. His research has been supported by awards from the MRC, Wellcome Trust, Action Medical Researcher, Autism Speaks, Tuberous Sclerosis Association and other medical research charities.
