Prof. Carlsson is a professor in Medical Cell Biology at Uppsala University, Sweden, which is a position inaugurated to support translational research activities, with affiliation to both a preclinical department, Department of Medical Cell Biology, and a clinical department, Department of Medical Sciences. He also serves as a senior endocrinologist at the Division for Diabetology and Endocrinology at Uppsala University Hospital and is a member of the board of the Nordic Network for Clinical Islet Transplantation with diabetologist responsibility for the transplantation program at Uppsala University Hospital.

In 2005, Prof. Carlsson received the Rising Star Award by the European Association for the Study of Diabetes as most promising young scientist in Diabetology under 35 years of age in Europe; in 2010 he received the Fernstrom Award as most promising and successful Scientist below 45 years of age at a Swedish Medical Faculty; and in 2012 the Swedish Juvenile Diabetes Foundation Prize for outstanding work in T1D research. Prof. Carlsson has been invited to give lectures at many international meetings over the years and has authored more than 130 scientific publications.
