Born in Aarau in 1940, Peter Suter studied medicine in Zurich and Vienna. He is pursuing postgraduate studies in internal medicine and intensive care in Geneva, San Francisco and Boston. In 1984, he was appointed Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Medicine of UNIGE. He also directs the Department of Surgical Intensive Surgery of University Hospitals of Geneva from 1982 to 2005, and becomes successively regular professor of UNIGE from 1995 to 2006, dean of the Faculty of Medicine from 1995 to 2003 and vice-rector of the University from 2003 to 2006.

He became President of the Swiss Academy of Medical Sciences in 2004 and President of the Swiss Academies of Sciences in 2009. Today he chairs the Swiss Medical Board, an association to evaluate effectiveness, adequacy and economics of the medical treatments required by the Health Insurance Act. At UNIGE, Peter Suter focused in particular on promoting excellence in research and teaching and their evaluation, as well as initiating academic reform in the Faculty of Economics. Medicine.
