Richard Shih, M.D., was born and raised in Wilmington, Delaware. He completed a 5-year accelerated medical-premedical program at Pennsylvania State University-Thomas Jefferson Medical School in 1988. He completed a surgical internship at the University of Maryland, an Emergency Medicine residency at the Medical Center of Delaware and a Medical Toxicology fellowship at the New York Poison Center, Bellevue-NYU Medical Center. He has authored over 50 articles in peer reviewed journals, over 20 book chapters and has been an editor in 3 medical books. He has received a number of teaching awards including the American College of Emergency Physicians National Faculty Teaching Award and the American Academy of Emergency Medicine Educator of The Year Award.

He served as the Emergency Medicine Program Director, Morristown Medical Center for 19 years. He has recently taken over the leadership of the newly created Division of Emergency Medicine at the Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine at Florida Atlantic University where he is a Professor of Integrated Medical Science in the Department of Integrated Medical Science.
