Dr. Robert Lambert is Chair of the Department of Radiology and Diagnostic Imaging at the University of Alberta (since 2002) and Professor of Musculoskeletal Radiology (since 2009). After training in Belfast, he did two years of musculoskeletal (MSK) radiology fellowship training in Toronto and has been head of MSK radiology at the University of Alberta since 1989. Dr. Lambert has been at the forefront of radiology innovation in Edmonton being responsible for the development of MSK MRI and introducing a number of interventional MSK services such as vertebroplasty (1996) and laser ablation of osteoid osteoma (2000).

His major fields of research relate to MSK MRI and arthritis including the development of image-based definitions and scoring tools for assessment of spondyloarthritis, MRI evaluation of cartilage, and randomized trials of arthritis therapy. He has published over 60 peer-reviewed articles and is a member of multiple international organizations in MSK radiology and arthritis research.

Dr. Lambert is the director of a core imaging lab that has been established in collaboration with CaRE Arthritis and is involved in extensive clinical trials research. He has developed multiple scoring systems for the analysis of inflammation and structural damage in inflammatory and degenerative arthropathies. These systems and related training modules are all electronic online programs that facilitate rapid and accurate analysis of imaging data from clinical trials and are catalysts for the development of novel research methods in medical imaging.
