Robert S. Lockridge, Jr, graduated from the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond before completing both his residency and fellowship there as well. He is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and is a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Virginia Department of Medicine. Additionally, Doctor Lockridge is the Medical Director of the UVA Home Dialysis program. Dr. Lockridge was a practicing community nephrologist in Lynchburg, Virginia since 1982. He was the medical director of the home dialysis program at Lynchburg Dialysis Facility. He grew the peritoneal program from no patients in 1982 to 60 PD patients by 1996 making up 22% of the LNP practice. He started the nocturnal home hemodialysis program, modeled after Dr. Pierratos's nocturnal program in Toronto, Canada, in Lynchburg in September 1997. It is the first nocturnal home hemodialysis program in the United States. Dr. Lockridge was one of the primary investigators for the FHN Nocturnal Trial sponsored by NIH and CMS enrolling 35 of the 87 patients in the FHN Nocturnal trial.
Presently actively involved in educating nephrology physician groups, home training nurses, renal social workers, and renal dietitians in the US and Canada about the practical aspects of HHD, who are candidates, and how HHD is prescribed. These presentations occur in community-based nephrology practices as well as academic centers. In addition, he is actively involved in advancing the concept of a “Transitional Care Unit” and involved with clinical research concerning Nocturnal Home Dialysis.
