Dr. Dotson is a licensed clinical psychiatrist. He specializes in psycho-oncology and psychotic disorders, such as schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, and bipolar disorder. He was initially drawn to psychiatry because of its deep commitment to a community's most vulnerable and neglected populations. He has also been impressed by the field's holistic biopsychosocial-spiritual approach to care.

Dr. Dotson loves to read new research in his field, apply those findings to help his patients recover, and teach best practices to young doctors. He has won multiple awards, including the Atrium Health Earl D. Short, Jr., MD Award for Clinical and Academic Excellence in Psychiatric Medicine, the Ed Messner Award for Resident Teaching from Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School, and the George C. Thrasher Jr. Award for Outstanding Student in Psychiatry from the UNC School of Medicine.

Additionally, he won the George Winokur Clinical Research Award from the American Academy of Clinical Psychiatrists and the Paul Howard Award for Respect for Patients and their Community from McLean Hospital and Harvard Medical School.

While at Massachusetts General Hospital, he was named the chief resident in public and community psychiatry and the chief resident in inpatient psychiatry. He received his medical degree at the University of North Carolina and completed a residency at the combined Massachusetts General Hospital and McLean Hospital program. Outside of work, he enjoys spending time with his family, biking, and hiking.
