Sarah M. Friedewald, MD, is a Professor of Radiology at Northwestern University, Feinberg School of Medicine, and Division Chief of Breast and Women’s imaging at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago. She is widely published in the field of breast imaging, with a specific interest in digital breast tomosynthesis or “3-D Mammography.” More recently her research interests include studying how artificial intelligence can improve breast cancer detection and how AI can streamline the patient journey from screening and diagnostic imaging to breast biopsy.
Because of her expertise in breast imaging, Dr. Friedewald was chosen to be one of the authors of the new Breast Imaging Reporting and Data Systems also known as BIRADS which is used as the primary lexicon in breast imaging around the world.
Dr. Friedewald earned her medical degree from Columbia University, College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City. She completed her residency in diagnostic radiology at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore and a fellowship in women’s imaging at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.
