Saskia Middeldorp MD, PhD

Saskia Middeldorp has been appointed Professor of Internal Medicine at Radboud University/Radboudumc. This chair is part of the position of Head of the Department of Internal Medicine that she has held since 1 January 2021. In her position as professor and department head, Saskia Middeldorp sees it as her mission to monitor and shape the balance between the role of generalist on the one hand and the role of expert on the other. She explains: "Internal medicine has developed enormously with innovations in terms of diagnostic and therapeutic modalities in recent decades. In addition to their in-depth expertise, internists continue to play a leading role in providing optimal patient care, scientific research, and training, thus realizing personalized care that does justice to the Radboudumc mission 'to have a significant impact on healthcare. She also aims to attract and retain top academic talent and continues to stimulate the department's leading clinical and translational research. 

Saskia Middeldorp will also continue her own research into thrombosis in special patient groups. Already during her Ph.D., she investigated the impact of hereditary thrombophilia and the influence of oral contraceptives on blood coagulation and thrombosis risk. In the following years, she further specialized in vascular medicine and in particular in thrombosis and thrombophilia, with a special focus on women. In 2012, she received a VIDI grant. 

Saskia Middeldorp (1966, Amsterdam) was trained as a physician and internist in Amsterdam, where she also received her Ph.D. in thrombosis and thrombophilia. After her training as an internist, she continued her career as a staff member at the AMC. From 2006 to July 2010, she worked at Leiden University Medical Center. In 2010 Saskia Middeldorp returned to Amsterdam and was appointed Professor of Internal Medicine at the AMC. She became co-head of the Department of Vascular Medicine, chaired the residency program in Vascular Medicine, and led the research lines in the field of Thrombosis and Hemostasis.
